MMIGRATION CURBS

The Council of the Swiss Abroad has called on the government to ensure that Switzerland is not cut off from education and research cooperation with the European Union countries despite the introduction of immigration quotas following February’s nationwide vote.

UKRAINE SECURITY

A scenario such as that in Crimea is unlikely in eastern Ukraine, according to Tim Guldimann, the Swiss diplomat serving as the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe’s (OSCE) personal envoy to Ukraine.

The Swiss parliament has passed the free trade agreement between Switzerland and China, despite some lingering concerns about human rights and immigration. Several senators abstained from the vote.

A Swiss Emmentaler has won the title of 2014 World Championship Cheese, held in Wisconsin, US, this week. Cheesemaker Gerard Sinnesberger took first place for his Original Schweizer Rohmilch Emmentaler, a large format, big wheel Swiss cheese.

Allegations, demands, proposals and questions – a heated debate in parliament about immigration quotas has shown the impact the ballot box decision is having on political parties nearly six weeks after Swiss voters approved limiting the number of foreigners.

HEALTH AND SOCIETY

Excessive alcohol consumption is not only bad for one’s health, it also puts a strain on companies and the economy in general. In Switzerland, the social costs linked to alcohol consumption reached CHF4.2 billion ($4.75 billion) in 2010.
